India - Khajuraho Tour, Holiday  and Travel Guides.

Visitor and Sightseeing Guide around Khajuraho and it's Jain and Hindu Temples.

The ghat at Khajuraho Town, India Temples and cows can be found everywhere at KhajurahoKhajuraho is a very small Indian town located in Madhya Pradesh which boasts one of the largest sets of Hindu and Jain Temples found anywhere. The town is hugely popular with tourists but until recently has been somewhat difficult to actually get too - especially as part of a more extensive touring holiday in India. There are flights three days a week which run between Delhi - Varanasi and turn round at Khajuraho Airport with Indian Airways - the airport is only 3kms from the town. A rail link has just been established so that you can now eventually get from for instance Delhi and Agra via Jhansi and Mahoba to the town. Train 2448 leaves Mahoba (MBA) for Khajuraho (KURJ) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 0620hrs returning back on the same days at 1815hrs. From Mahoba the world opens as far as rail travel is concerned since there are connections onto Jhansi - Agra and so on.

Khajuraho is a small town which is somewhat split - most hotels and other accommodation is in and around the more modern main street - where you will also find several restaurants, fruit stalls and plenty of shops selling all the things that tourists really do want to buy - apparently. Down the end of the main street (opposite end to the main Western temple area) the road soon reaches the old village. Here there are some very interesting old buildings within the narrow alleys some of which have excellent tiled roofs. There are various artisan shops selling more of what tourists really need of course but you are basically left to your own devices. If you wander on through the old town you quickly enter open countryside - where you will find scattered farms and of course being that you are in Khajuraho - various temples dotted around.

Eastern Group. Entrance to the Eastern Group of Temples is free as it is out in the open countryside so you can wander around whenever you like. As can be seen below there is also an abundance of wild life as well as pigs and so on having a nice time out in the area - well worth the trip out.

Jain Group. There is no admission charge to this temple group however there is an entrance gate - open daily from sunrise to sunset. Watch out for touts - if you take an auto rickshaw a tout is likely to jump in the front and offer to take you to the old village. As normal with touts in India you may well get "I want to learn English", "I am a student", "I do not want any money" - translated this means "I want to get every penny I can drag out of you". Once at the Old village he will try and get money from you for various reasons - for instance towards the school (he means his pocket) or some other worthy cause (he still means for his pocket), or perhaps try to get you into an "antiques" shop/house. Best thing is to chuck out such touts and just have the auto-rickshaw driver take you there on his own. Even better is just to put on a decent pair of shoes or boots and go for a walk - it's not that far and quite interesting.

Southern Group. This small group of temples are right out in the countryside so you will certainly need an auto rickshaw to visit these . There are no admission charges so you can go anytime really - though expect a "guide" to turn up at the temples who will of course want 20 or 30 rupees.

Chausath Yogini Temple, Khajuraho Lalguan Mahadev Temple, Khajuraho Western Group (External to the Town). Located out in the countryside - you can walk to these - it's around 2 kilometres across the fields. Facing the main temple group area at the junction at the top of the town go left passing the Lake. The path shown on maps and guide books going off to the right alongside Shivsagar Lake is closed. You have to walk on down the road and take the first small road on the right - this winds through houses and then heads back to far side of the lake where it rejoins the path. The first temple (Chausath Yogini) is not too far ahead and obvious to find but the second temple (Lalguan Mahadev) is a bit harder. Almost certainly a young lad from the village will turn up and offer to take you - this is a good idea since the path is far from obvious - he will be quite happy with 50 or 60 rupees.

Main Western Group of Temples. Situated at the top of the town these fantastic temples are situated in really beautiful grounds which have lots of grassy areas, flowers, trees and shrubs. The site is open daily and has an admission charge of 250 Rupees for non-Indians, within the grounds there is a quite small cafe where you can get cold drinks and limited snacks like crisps.
